Kohvik esitleb: pronksiöö ninamees Maksim Reva
Kohvik hakkab vahendama katkeid intervjuust pronksiöö ühe nn ninamehe Maksim Revaga (33), kes istus pärast eestivenelaste meelavaldust pool aastat vangis. Esimene, sissejuhatav osa intervjuust algab ülevaatega eestivene kunstniku ja poetessi Maria Reppo näitusest Eduard Vilde majamuuseumis Kadriorus. Neli Reppo teost on inspireeritud 2007. aasta aprillisündmustest. Üles võetud 2009. aasta jaanuari lõpus.

"Am wealthy,ill and looking for a kidney.´The GLOBAL BUSINESS for body parts is booming.
Especially bizarre-executed prisoners are officially disemboweled in China.At this time,Manwred Nowak,the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel,Inhuman,or Degrading Treatment,is taking a deep look at this macabre practice."
Mabel Wu didn´t pay any attention to her medical specialist´s concerns.This 69-year old lady from Northridge,a quiet suburb in Los Angeles,traveled against her doctor´s advice to the booming South China city of Dongguan in
Guangzou province.She was going to buy a new kidney for USD 40 000.
Soon after her arrival,she was told that the donor of the kidney was a 30-year old man.
There were another four patients at the Donghuan hospital,all from Taiwan,who already had their kidney transplant.Wu returned to California after the transplant,happy with the new kidney.
Chinese hospitals gloat without feeling embarassed about their extravagant services.One reads on the official website of China´s International Organ Transplant Center,"If you are inquiring about an organ,pleae transfer USD 5000.
It will take no more than a week to find a suitable donor for you most of the time,once we confirm receipt of the funds,and at the most only one month,"
The USD 5000 is only the downpayment.One can expect at least 30 000 Euro for a kidney,70 000 Euro for a liver,and a heart is 140 000.Euro-quite a bit more expencive.
The patients are told under complete secrecy that the organ donors are mostly executed prisoners,who are still alive at the time the the recipient arrives in China.At the same time,the Chinese contacts brag about their bizarre practice:"We do not remove organs from humans who are brain dead,because that would affect the condition of the organ."
Lately,the highest-level Chinese enties confirm that prisoners and concentration camps are used to store human parts.Juang Jeifu,the Deputy Minister of Health,admitted last year,"Besides a very few accident victims,most of the organs come from executed prisoners." He said that those organ donors have"agreed" beforehand to be organ donors.
David Matas and David Kilgour are quite certain that this is far the truth.Matas,a noted Canadian human rights attorney and Kilgour,the former Secretary at the Canadian Foreign Ministry,have painstakingly investigated Chinese organ harvesting practices,and disclosed details in a report that has caused quite a stir.
The two arrived at the following:During the past six years,China´s transplant enterprise,which scarcely existed before that time,has taken a lucrative upswing.Most notably,the non-transparent transplant business began to boom after the massive repression of Falun Gong adherents-the practioners of an esoteric sect,which Chinese officials persecute cruelly.
According to Matas and Kilgour,"several hundred" of ill people travel to China annualy for an organ transplant that is necessary for survival.
The evidence presented thus far by the two is so tight that even the United Nations has demanded a formal investigation.
Manfred Nowak,a human rights lawyer from Vienna and the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel,Inhuman,or Degrading Treatment,gave the Chinese regime a deadline to come clean concerning the allegations.
The issues is "definitely a case that requires investigation," as much of the evidence points out that"humans are executed who had not even been convicted of anything,and are killed for their organs," he says.
In plain language:Sick people from the U.S.,Canada,Saudi Arabia and many other countries are the reason people in China are executed-people who most likely
would never have been executed were there no demand for organs.
There are many more executions in China than in any other Country worldwide.It is unknown just how many are executed.
Official numbers are not available.But a moderate guess is that there are 1700 executions yearly.There were over 60 000 organ transplants during the past six years.Even if each candidate for execution were to be the donor of more than one organ,the executions would not even come close to the number of actual transplants performed over those years.This raises the suspicion that besides the"regular" executions,people are being murdered solely for their organs-to satisfy market demand.
The reason for this explosive demand is naturally the shortage of donor organs worldwide-though the demand is in some countries more dramatic than in others.
Those who are waiting for a heart or an organ,but must wait in line in one´s home counry and might not receive one,thus have to rely on China´s execution system.
Manfred Nowak´s office is on the fourh floor of the Schottenstift,a peaceful corner in Vienna´s first district.The Ludwig-Boltzmann Institute for Humans Rights just moved there and Nowak sits there as he goes through his correspondence with the Chinese officials.
"The marketplace demands cheap organs and looks for bargains," said the UN Rapporteur.From a moral standpoint,it sounds rather awful."But,the accusations against China are totally different issue.In this case,the market mechanics are coinciding with a state sanctioned suppression mechanism."
The market,authorianism,and GLOBAL DISPARTIES-a fatal mix.
Novak looks disbelievingly at one of the letters from the Chinese regime where they categoricaly deny the accusation.It´s all of two pages long.
"This is just not enough," says Novak.
"The evidence documented in the Canadian Matas-Kilgour report is much too sound(for such as short response)."
From time to time one´s breath stops when reading the report.Chinese members of the Matas-Kilgour research team called hospitals in China and identified themselves as potential clients.When asked for the availabity of young and healthy organs from falun gong adherents,the medical head of one transplant team replied,"Yeas,they are generally available to us."
The next question by the researchers,"And what about now?" was answered with "Yes."
Another surgeon suggested to the pretend-patient that she should approach Guangzhou´s hospitals.
"Could you find organs from Falun Gong practioners?" "Correct" is the answer.
Next question:"Is the organ from a healthy Falun Gong practioner?"
The answer,"Correct.We will choose only a good one,because we guarantee the quality of our transplants."
Another question,"Usually,how old are the organ suppliers?" was answered with"In their thirties."
Client and supplier discussions such as above are common place where a market system and a state-sanctioned represive aparatus commit to a macabre relationship.
In China the clinics advertise without any shame the perfect cooperation between medical people,government,and"the courts".
The old banners with the communist rallying cry that hang outside the hospitals look a sick joke.
One of the slogans that wave in the wind reads,"Keep humans in the most important place."

REPORT DOCUMENTS GRISLY HARVESTING OF FALUN GONG ORGANS
Former Canadian Secretary of State David Kilgour and international human rights lawyer David Matas have released a newly-expanded investigative report into organ harvesting from Falun Gong practioners in hospitals across
China.The report presents a range of new testimony and disturbing evidence from hospitals and organ recipients;the involment of China´s
army becomes particularly apparent in the report.
The authors have called on all states to ban what is being called
"transplant tourism" to China,among other recommendations.
"Once a customer arrives in China,somebody is killed for the organ,"according to Matas.New findings in the report include:
1.Donor testimony that operations are done in secretive fashion,suggesting cover up of a crime;
2.Heavy military involvement in the organ transplant business;
3.Additional admissions from hospitals that they posses Falun Gong organs for transplant.
4.Further testimony from Falun Gong victim witnesses about systematic blood testing of only Falun Gong practioners in detention and the disapearance of massive numbers of adherents in detention;
5.The building of dedicated facilities for organ transplants without any identifiable source for transplants other than prisoners;
6.Corroborating studies from other independent researches coming to the same conclusion as the
Kilgour-Matas report.
7.Failure to implement law put in force July 1,2006,prohibiting organ harvesting without consent;
8.The absence of any meaningful answer or contradiction from the Government of China to the first version of the report;
9.The absence of an organ donation system in China.

COULD IT REALLY BE TRUE...?
A History of Silence suggests"Yes"
"(Our findings) represent a grotesque form of evil which,despite all the depravations humanity has seen,would be new to this planet.The very horror makes us reel back in disbielief.But that disbielief does not mean that the allegations are untrue."
Thus began David Matas and David Kilgour in the preface to their recent report into organ harvesting from living Falun Gong members in China,knowing full well challenges,moral and visceral,the report might pose for its readers and legislatures in the free world.To paraphrase Al Gore:we´re dealing with"an inconvenient genocide."
If Matas and Kilgour´s remark was forward looking in its precience,perhaps it was equally a mix of hindsight.That is,in the 20th century there is a haunting legacy for this sort of thing.For in the Holocaust lies a tale of immence indiference and disbielief in the face documented,concrete acts of evil.The parallels are chilling.
First,much akin to the U.S. relations with 1930s Germany,today´s China is very much economically interwoven with our country;just glimpse around any office and chek how many items bear the label"made in China" for
quick confirmation.A vast array of powerful interests and istitutions want,or believe they "need,"China to be a normal,
prosperous,uneventful place.
U.S. corporations have even gone so far as to sell internet surveillance technology to China´s comunist leaders,who use it to arest the likes of democracy advocates and underground Christian.It is extremely hard for persons in China to get the world out abot the injustices they suffer.
China´s regime,meanwile,spends tens of millions each year on sophisticated international PR firms to foster and reinforce this image of normality.Many lap it up.You can sleep easier at night this way,after all;it´s easier to still dream about striking oil in China in the absence of thing like kidneys being carved out of living prisoners of conscience.
Persons of Chinese descent are no longer exotic,foreign nationals but part of our nation too,and thus,we share in the same humanity.Itś hard to picture your neighbor applying scalding iron rods to someone on a torture rack,after all.
According to Martin Kalb,in his remarks at the U.U. Holocaust Momorial Museum several years back,this was a major factor in the Nazi case."Many people simply could not believe that the German people,so highly educated,so sophisticated,so cultured,would be engaged-or could be negaged-in the systematic exterminations of the Jews,"Kalb stated.
So much so,in fact,that the Olympics were awarded to Nazi Germany.The regime made the event into a tremendous publicity stunt,reassuring the world all was normal.Many suggest that the 2008 Beijing Olympics is history repeating itself,pure and simple.
Kalb and others also indicate that government leaders,even once aware of crisis of holocaust proportions,might respond with a cold incredulity.In one instance President Rosevelt urged Rabbi Stephen Wise to stop badgering him for immediate intervention in the then-unfolding Jewish Holocaust,even though it was by then known that 2 million Jews had been murdered."The mills of the gods," Rosevelt reportedly said,"grind slowly."
In the more recent case of Rwanda´s genocide,state officials proved all too credulous,only in the wrong way:they were eager to hear the reassurances of the very perpetrators of genocide.Again.for reasonsof convenience.
Amantha power,writing in the Atlantic monthly,has said,"Because most official contact occurs between representatives of states,U.S. officials were predisposed to trust the assurances of Rwandan officials,several of whom were plotting genocide behind the scenes."
In the case of claims of Falun Gong organ harvesting in China,the U.S. State Department quickly dismissed the issue after a staff member was given a show tour of one northeastern Chinese hospital.Little,if anything,has been done since,despite three witnesses from China emerging to testify to the contrary and the investigations of Matas and Kilgour.(The latter of whom,notably,have recordings of Chinese physicians confirming the practice of killing Falun gong for their body parts.)

But perhaps the greatest problem of all is none other than the press,which has stumbled repeatedly,the Holocaust shows,at the critical juncture.
No case is more telling than that
of the New york times.The subject of an entire book--Buried by the Times:the Holocaust and America´s Most Important Newspaper--the paper´s coverage of the Holocaust was so minimal in proportion to what was known at the time,it bordered on cover-up.
Acording to the book´s author,Laurel Leff,the Time´s Germany bureau even demonstrated a"tendency to put the most positive spin on the increasingly desperate situation of Reich Jews...The brutality had reached such a degree that perhaps there was fear that if it were reported on the front page as a matter of fact it would come across as unbelievable."
And there was of course,
as with today,the
MATTER OF BUSINESS.Leff quotes Arthur Hays Sulzberger,the paper´s publisher,as rationalizing that it`Had to do business`in Germany.
In an eerily reminiscent development,the Time´s website was miraculously unblocked by China´s censors several years ago following a meeting of the paper´s editor and publisher with none other than China´s Communist Party leader and then-ruler,Jiang Zemin.Notably,coverage of Falun Gong,already thin at that time,become all but nonexistent in the months and years to follow.
At last count,it had been a story on the murder of Falun Gong followers in China.Ditto for AP,Reuters and major papers such as the Washington post.Yet during this same period the known death toll has risen sharply,and sources from China have come forth to destify about the grisly pervesrsions of surgery now taking place.When sources such as the producer of this paper--the Falun Dafa Information Center--have tried to publicize such findings,most media have seemingly wished the whole affair away--jornalism´s equivalent of the ostrich buying it head in the sand,as it were.
Again,there is precedent.As Leff has documented,the Times´s Berlin Bureau Chief,Guido Enderis,"frequently discredited stories of Jewish persecution that came from the JTA(Jewish Telegraphie Agency)...or from other sources."
One leading reporter for the Times,Frederick Birchall,openly stated on CBS radio that Germany had no designs to enact the"slaughter of the enemies or racial oppression in any vital degree," and instead forecasted"prosperity and peace," reassuring listeners that German violence "was spent."
How was it that accomplished journalists could succumb to such naivete,if not comlicity? For one,there was of course constant pressure and coercion from the German regime.Much like today´s
Communist Party in China,Nazi authorities would routinely summon reporters and chastise them for critical coverage,often threatining to revoke visas or even ban the publication.Many simlpy learn a form of convient obedience after months or years of unreleting pressure,the case of the Berlin bureau suggests.
Leff´s work offers a second perspective,namely,a more simple human failing:the inability to understand"the other."
"At some level,journalists,like other bystanders,did not recognize the importance of what was happening to the Jews because it was not happening to them,or to their readers,or to a group they or(they assumed)their readers could identify with,"Leff says.
in this vein,we hope this paper may in some small regard bridge that gap in the case of China,and bring out the humanity of those who suffer the injustice we describe and the terrible inhumanity of what is being perpetrated.
If history tells us anything,it is that we have to do better.There is much at stake.
